If your doctor has a concern that you have any of the following conditions, he may suggest polysomnography:
- Sleep apnea or another breathing disorder associated with sleep: During sleep, you experience this situation when you're breathing frequently stops and resumes.
- Condition of irregular limb mobility: You unintentionally flex and extend your legs as you sleep if you have this sleep problem. Sometimes this illness coexists with restless legs syndrome.
- Narcolepsy: In this state, you experience extreme daytime sleepiness and unexpected sleep attacks.
- REM sleep behavior: As you sleep, you act out your dreams if you have this sleep disorder.
- Abnormal sleeping habits: If you engage in uncommon sleep behaviors like walking, moving around a lot, or rhythmic movements, your doctor might order this test.
- Persistent insomnia without cause: If you regularly struggle to get to sleep or stay asleep, your doctor might recommend polysomnography.
